The military has announced it is now in full control of Mubi, Gombi, Maiha and Hong local government areas of Adamawa State earlier occupied by the Boko Haram insurgents.
An army officer, who chose to remain anonymous, conducted newsmen round the council areas at the weekend. According to him, the troops in collaboration with other security agencies chased out the insurgents.
He explained that it became necessary to take journalists on the tour in order to debunk insinuation that the insurgents were still in the areas and more importantly, to assure residents of the affected areas that their places were safe, well protected and fortified for them to return to their homes.
Although the insurgents have been dislodged, the streets were still deserted, with apparent fear renting the air.
Business has resumed in markets at the commercial town of Mubi, other public and private businesses however remained closed.
Some residents, who spoke to Vanguard narrated their ordeal, but expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives.
“I thank God for keeping me alive to tell this story, though we lost all our property to the Boko Haram insurgents. My shop and house were locked, we had to move to the mountains in the border with Cameroon to hide for weeks.
“The Nigerian Army tried by recapturing this town as I never thought of coming back soon,” a resident told Vanguard.
