Four Handed Death Sentence For Armed Robbery In Ilorin

Four suspected armed robbers have been sentenced to death by hanging by an Ilorin High Court.

The condemned armed robbers identified as Ibrahim Olayiwola, Abdulwaheed Aliyu, Tunde Kareem and Omotayo Isah were said to have broken down after the sentence was handed down by the presiding judge, Justice S.T Umar.

According to reports from Leadership:

They were charged for robbing the petroleum attendants of Rockfield Petroleum Filling Station, Odota, Ilorin, in February 2011, contrary to the provisions of Section 97 of the Penal Code and Section 1 (2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special provisions) Act, CAP R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Umar said he agreed with the lead prosecution counsel, M.A.I Akande, that the prosecution has proved its case against the convicts beyond reasonable doubt.

The court further held that “there is sufficient evidence to establish that the four convicts conspired among themselves and did rob the petroleum attendants of Rockfield Petroleum Filling Station, Odota, Ilorin on February 18, 2011, while armed with guns, contrary to the provisions of Section 97 of the Penal Code and Section 1 (2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special provisions) Act, CAP R11 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

The convicts were accordingly sentenced to death by hanging.

Counsel to the first suspect, Rapheal Ashaolu, argued that Olayiwola was not at the scene of the incident but was arrested as one of the suspects.

However, Counsels to the second, third and fourth accused, Barr Abdulhameed, Abdul Gegele and Kamaldeen Gambari, respectively, pleaded the alibi, but the court rejected it on the ground that the [alibi of the] police station was not part of the pleas.
