The industry is hard and comebacks are very rare. A few nigerian musicians have staged unsuccessful comebacks after a long sabbatical. They say leave while the ovation is loudest but forgot to include that once you leave, it is better not to return. The music industry globally celebrates you while you are fully active and once you take a short break, the attention moves to the next man and stays with him. The reason is that in your absence, the ever evolving music trends change and if you are not careful, you may not be able to meet up.
American rapper Ja Rule and singer Ashanti were some of the hottest artistes in the early 2000’s, they ruled the music industry globally but after a short break, they both disappeared and couldn’t make a come back.Eedris Abdulkarim was at the zenith of his career when he got involved in a fight with American rapper 50 Cent and got into the bad books of former president Olusegun Obasanjo after releasing Jaga Jaga.Abdukarim‘s career died and even after numerous attempts to make a comeback, he couldn’t. Another example is Kelly Handsome who fell out of favour with his record label Kennis Music and numerous battles with owners of the label, Kelly‘s comeback never saw the light of day.
When Olu Maintain dropped Yahoozee, the whole industry went crazy for him. The music wasn’t only a monster hit, the video at the time was one of the best. Olu kept churning out hit singles with top notch videos and we felt he was here to stay. Whatever happened, Olu maintain disappeared and all his attempts at making a comeback has failed.
The music industry hardly gives a second chance and once you fall out favour, coming back is extremely difficult if not impossible. The list of top artistes who have failed to stage a comeback after a break is endless.
