Kano state joined other cities in the world in publicly counting down to the New Year for the first time in its history.
Thousands of Kano residents, including the governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and his deputy, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who is the APC governorship candidate for the 2015 elections, converged on the newly constructed Kwankwasiyya Freedom Square within the multi-billion naira Mahaha Sports Complex in Kano metropolis to mark the beginning of the New Year 2015.
The event started a few minutes to midnight as the people began the countdown to 12am.
Organised by the Kano state government, the occasion featured fireworks display, music and dancing.
Speaking at the event, Gov. Kwankwaso said that he was happy about how 2014 went for Kano state.
“We are happy to have built modern infrastructure, delivered services, created jobs, minimised poverty and ultimately improved the lives of people of Kano state,” he said.
He said that the Kwankwassiya Freedom Square would be used for different celebration purposes, adding that the place will also accommodate different sporting activities as well as a sports academy for the youth.
