According to the authentic narration, Prophet Abraham was inspired by Allah The Most High in a dream to slaughterer his son Ishaq (Isaac). Abraham who have lived close to 100 years without a child only to be directed to slaughter his son on 10th of Dhul Hijjah. Abraham narrated his inspiration to his son that, that was the commandment from Allah The Most High. His son protagonised him to carry the command,

“God willing you find me among the patient ones”.

When he laid his son down, upon slaughtering the child, Allah The Most High directed Arc angel Jibril (Gabriel) to change the child and place Ram. Then Abraham slaughtered the Ram and Allah was pleased with his action.

Since then the ritual continue till the last day.

In Islam, Ram is the most prepared animal for the sacrifice. While she-Camel is the least wanted. The animal for the sacrifice should be healthy and fully matured before carrying out the sacrifice. One is advised to divide the meat into 3; one for his house-hold consumption, one for neighbors, and the other for sacrifice.

The whole essence of the ritual is to increase one with fear of Allah and to increase ones obedience to the laws of Allah the Most High. In chapter 22 verse 37, it was stated that neither the meat or the blood reach Almighty Allah, but only the fear of Allah. The reason for the ritual was also stated in the same chapter. The main reason is so that we respect Allah and gratefulness for his guidance to mankind.

It was reported that at one time Prophet Muhammad slaughtered many animals feed them to the poor. For some one rich and wishing to seek the mercy and blessings of Allah, then let him use this opportunity to feed the opportunity to make the Eid celebrations enjoyed by the poor.

The essence of charity and Zakat (mandatory charity) in Islam to increase unity and brotherhood, as charity is increases unity and love. While for the Zakat, it purifies ones wealth. And eradicated poverty in the society.

May Allah accept our fidya (sacrifice), protect us, and make peace to reign in our country. Ameen.
