Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has suggested five ways to end the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
In his statement, the former Lagos State governor said the Nigerian Government has been implementing aone-dimensional approachto the terrorist group which poses the greatest security challenge to Nigeria since the Biafran War that ended 40 years ago.
The opposition party leader added that President Goodluck Jonathan administration’s half-hearted approach to its own policy only allows the sect to spread geographically.
First of all,Chief Tinubu says, the Government must acknowledge the economic, political and social dimensions of the Boko Haram challenge.
Secondly,it should address the non-military aspects of the crisis, reaching to the most terrorism-affected areas in the North. Although, Chief Tinubu says, only a small group of people actually support Boko Haram, the majority sees the Government as yet another layer of opression.
That is why people think ill of the authorities and are indifferent to the fight against Boko Haram. The Government should ensure conditions for youth employment and economic growth, thus diverting young people from joining the sect and earning a good name with the people.
Thirdly, current military operations carried out by the Nigerian Army are “clumsy,” too heavy and often affect innocent civilians, Chief Tinubu points out. To minimize the dissatisfaction, the security forces should desist from lashing out their frustration against ordinary Nigerians for the harm Boko Haram had done.
The next step is,according to Tinubu, to stop alienating the society thus improving the government’s intelligence-gathering capacity. The positive image of the authorities prompt the citizens to come forward and provide important information on the insurgents’ activity.
Finally,Tinubu said a regional summit with Nigeria’s neighbours is needed as the Boko Haram challenge has an international dimension.
Yesterday, anew video issued by Boko Haramsurfaced on the Internet. In it, the sect’s leader Abubakar Shekau claims responsibility for the abduction of some 200 young female students from their school’s dormitory in Chibok town, Borno State. Shekau slams democracy as a form of government and threatens to unleash even more violence in Nigeria. Previously, the sect had claimed responsibilityfor the Nyanya bombing in Abuja.
